I know, I know. You haven’t heard from me in FOR - EV -ER! Sorry. I’m still learning how to get all the pieces and parts of a thriving art business to run smoothly, WHILE staying open to the creative juices flowing, so I can paint too!
My lack of communication is actually a good thing. It means that my studio has been on fire this year. I have created 40 paintings in 2017 - a record for me. And a majority of them are large ones! So I’ve been busy……
It’s been really exciting for me also, because I am working with a wonderful art consultant who has placed five large paintings at Sloan Miyasato Fine Art in the San Francisco Design Center. You can go visit them there right now.
I’m also thrilled to mention that I have a solo show going on right now in Oakland at 555 City Center in their lobby, with an amazing sculpture, Eric Powell. It will be up until November 15th. It showcases mostly my 2016, bright colorful paintings, with a few from 2017 of my Sphere/Floral Series.
Speaking of Sphere/Floral Series - I felt a real shift this year in general in terms of what colors and themes inspired me. I have taken a respite from my bright and expressionistic works and have been intrigued by more defined shapes. I’m using a lot of more controlled line work to create spheres, and florals and globes, and they are being created in more subdued colors on richly-layered backgrounds. I still love working in blue (my favorite color to paint in), but I also have done a series of greys and softer colors.
I think this shift for me is response to a lot of shifting going on in my personal life - as I’m an empty-nester now. My paintings are softer, more heart-centered, perhaps reflecting a quieter life now? And then, maybe it’s just that with all the intensity out in the world, the softer palette and theme just FEELS better to me right now.
I’m planning on being open for Winter Open Studios at the ICB (Industrial Center Building), 480 Gate 5 Road, In Sausalito, on December 1, 2, 3, so I hope you will come visit. And in the meantime, you may always view my website because I keep it updated regularly: www.katezimmer.com.
Thanks again for your interest in my paintings and I hope to hear from you soon!
2016 was a year I indulged in a ton of color in my paintings. I was feeling open and alive, almost celebratory.
But then early 2017 rolled around. Maybe it was the weather, or the political climate, or both, but I wasn't feeling colorful at all. I found myself working in a more monochromatic palette of mostly blue and white.
A few were even painted on stretched canvas, instead of my usual wood panels. There’s a lighter, staining quality and an almost water color-like feeling, versus my usual thicker work on wood panels.
I called these the Dark and Stormy Series. A reflection of, literally, the weather outside and my inner landscape.
I’m realizing more and more that I am affected by the seasons, the planetary changes, the people I love, and the people I’ve lost. My paintings are manifestations of an internal journey made external. I guess I'm just a cosmic gal. And now summer is almost here and color is talking to me again…
